The Urinary System
Available Lessons
Hollister Education has developed an online course the Urinary System that offers students, junior nurses and interested people working in health care settings who have some practical nursing experience, the opportunity to learn more about this specialized area of care. There are a total of five lessons that can be viewed in any order, with ongoing activities and an assessment at the conclusion of each lesson. Topics include: Physiology of voiding, Upper urinary tract, Lower urinary tract, Urine and Nervous system and bladder control. Each lesson contains a glossary of terms and reference resources.
- Provide a basic description of the physiology of the normal bladder
- Gain a basic understanding of the overall urinary system

- Recognise the main structural components of the upper urinary tract: Kidneys, Renal Pelvis, Ureters
- Gain an understanding of the anatomy and function of each organ in the upper urinary tract

- Recognise the main structure component of the lower urinary tract: Bladder, Urethra, Genitalia, Pelvic Floor, Male Prostate Gland
- Gain an understanding of the anatomy and function of each organ in the lower urinary tract

- Provide a basic description of the dipstick testing process
- Understand other diagnostic urine tests

- Recognise the central nervous sytem, peripheral nervous system, and hypogastric, pelvic and pudendal nerves
- Understand the neurological functions and bladder control: primitive relfexes, reflex bladder dysfunction, flaccid bladder dysfunction
